In 2005 is vond de eerste editie van BO! Showcases & Open Mic plaats. Amsterdam Zuidoost is hiervoor de perfecte plaats, want achter de gevels van de flats en in de jongerencentra barst het van het onontdekte talent. Met name op het gebied van Urban Culture: een verzamelnaam voor, van oorsprong, zwarte muziek, streetfashion en streetart. Deze urban uitingen komen tot ontplooiing op het podium van BO!.
BO! biedt aanstormend talent een professioneel podium, aanwezig netwerk van scouts, interessante media, andere podia en samenwerkende organisaties, de mogelijkheid om de kwaliteit van een showcase direct te laten toetsen door een deskundig panel en de BO! Masterclass. Dit laatste is maatwerk: BO! regelt en betaalt masterclasses indien jongeren aangeven de behoefte hebben aan extra training of indien BO! een behoefte signaleert. Zo zijn er in 2007 verschillende masterclasses geweest op het gebied van presentatie en zang.
BO! richt zich naast talentontwikkeling op het podium ook op jongerenparticipatie: de doelgroep denkt actief mee over vorm en inhoud. De leden van de redactieraad zijn de ogen en oren van de doelgroep en zijn op de hoogte van wat er speelt in de scene. De raad heeft een ongedwongen, open en vrijwillig karakter. De vaste kern bestaat uit zo'n tien jongeren, die gemiddeld twee keer per maand bijeenkomen om mee te denken over concrete zaken als programmering, promotie en speciale acties. De jongeren uit de redactieraad zijn tijdens de maandelijkse BO! avonden ook crewlid en helpen bijvoorbeeld bij de kassa of de techniek.
Door actieve deelname van jongeren aan BO! is er in de loop der tijd een vorm van ownership ontstaan, waar BO! trots op is. BO! wordt door de doelgroep gezien als een "professioneel podium uit Amsterdam Zuidoost, dat open staat voor inbreng". Verzoeken om een stageplaats worden regelmatig gehonoreerd en BO! ondersteunt jongeren met advies en kantoorfaciliteiten om hun eigen plannen en initiatieven te verwezenlijken.
Door het formele circuit (andere podia en organisaties) wordt BO! gezien als een serieuze speler op de markt. Voor de tweede keer op een rij heeft de Grolsch Grote Prijs van Nederland in 2007 drie aanstromende talenten gescout voor de halve finale van deze landelijke competitie. Verder krijgt BO! regelmatig verzoeken om finalisten van andere competities te laten optreden of voor het houden van cd releases. Verzoeken waar BO! zoveel mogelijk gehoor aan geeft.
Visie
BO! is in 2005 gestart vanuit een visie dat het Amsterdam Zuidoost ontbreekt aan een professioneel podium voor talent. Sindsdien heeft BO! zich met succes ingezet om talent de volle ruimte te geven om zich te presenteren en hiermee Amsterdam Zuidoost op de culturele kaart te zetten. BO! blijft dit belang onderstrepen en zal ook in 2008 om het podium nog meer vorm te geven en uit te laten groeien tot een platform waar talentontwikkeling en jongerenparticipatie centraal staat.
